Speak Up for Justice for Journalists in Iraq

Sunday 3 August 2008

Target: KRG Minister of Human Rights, Dr. Yousif M. Aziz
Sponsored by: Care2

Several journalists and writers from the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq have received death threats in recent days, despite a recent statement by U.S. General Petraeus saying that violence in Iraq is declining to almost "normal levels". One of the men, Souran 'Omar, was on a list of journalists at risk of being killed, apparently for criticizing the political parties in the region. Two others on the list, journalist Souran Mama Hama and academic 'Abd al-Sattar Taher Sharif, have been killed.

130 journalists have been killed and 51 have been kidnapped since the war in Iraq began five years ago. The victims are of many nationalities, but Iraqis are grossly over represented.

Journalists in the Kurdistan region of Iraq who criticize the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) are at particular risk. Journalists have been arbitrarily arrested and detained without trial, and sometimes tortured. Some have been abducted in the street and beaten by armed men wearing civilian clothes, and then released a few hours or days later.

This abuse of civilians needs to stop. Journalists are an invaluable group to the public who deserve justice and security.

Tell the KRG Minister of Human Rights to stop this abuse of human rights now -- and to uphold the right to freedom of expression in Iraq.

Make Affordable Health Care a Major Focus This Election Year!

Target: Democratic and Republican National Committees
Sponsored by: Divided We Fail

Skyrocketing health care costs. Millions left uninsured. Few answers on long-term care. With problems of this magnitude, you would expect the fall election to focus on solving America's health care crisis.

But will we hear enough from the parties about their plans to work together on health care? That's up to you. Tell the Democratic and Republican National Committees to tell us their plans in this fall's targeted races. Fill out the form below to send a letter to the Republican Party and Democratic Party today!

Take Action! An Introduction..

Thursday 31 July 2008

Hey all!

I'm Tara. This blog has a purpose in life. Actually, it has many purposes. It all depends on which day you check in. =)

This blog will consist of action alerts... Petitions for you to sign to change the world, ways to help people in need without more than a click, and ways to change your life to improve the quality of it.

Truth be told, much of the content I'll feature here won't be written by me. That's probably a good thing as my own writing tends to get a bit cryptic at times. If you're interested in me (for gods know what reason), I've provided a few different ways to contact me at the bottom of this post.

Bookmark this blog! Check in often. There might be a life-saving alternative or cause for you to check in on. As always...Slainte! ;-)
